(MA15+) Directed by Kim Farrant
Starring Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving

by Ben McEachen

Our Nic's first Aussie indie since Dead Calm (1989), this psychological mystery about missing kids serves much to absorb and ponder. Kim Farrant's feature debut is an atmospheric mosaic, deftly using Outback locations and vibe to ensconce us within the myriad effects of disappearance. Performances land, amid carnal and relational gut-punches. Sadly, intrigue dulls in the second half as the kaleidoscopic array of suspicions, reactions and underlying issues tends to evade substance. Ambiguity is favoured, over potent determinations.
